Your Account

How long does it take for us to process an application and set up an account?
Generally, if all of your billing information is in order, it should take less than 24 hours to set up your account, and at most times just a few minutes.

Who do I contact in case of a billing problem?
In the event of any billing issues, please email our Billing Department.

What control panel is offered with your hosting packages?
All packages come equipped with cPanel. Simply access via:
http://www.yourdomain.ext/cpanel and type your username / Password

Can I select my own user account name?
Upon signing up with us you will be asked for a user name and password, but if you do not
supply one we will assign one to your account

Can I change my user account name?
Yes you can, but this can cause problems and more than often it means a termination
of your account and a recreation in the new user name

Can I change my own user password?
Yes in the users control panel

I have been notified that my account has been set up but my site is still not active.
It generally takes 24 hours for domain names to become active.
This is just how the Internet works; there is no way we can control or speed up the process.
If you have received your notification email and it's been over 48 hours,
it means either that you did not point your domain name to the right DNS servers,
or that your ISP's DNS server has not yet been updated.

I have NOT been notified that my account has been set up and its been over 24 hours.
This could be caused by a provisioning error. If you have not received any
emails from us within a few hours of ordering, please contact us

Will you place any ads on my site?
Not at all. We do not place any advertisement on your site whatsoever.
No banners, no annoying pop-ups, nothing.

You have changed my account and not informed me
Please insert an up-to-date email into your accounts contact address box.
When we make changes, cPanel uses this email to inform you that something
has changed, if there is no email inserted it will guess as the main account
email address and send an email to admin@yourdoamname.ext and that's it
Do not use your accounts email address use your ISP's email address

Can I get a dedicated IP?
We follow ARIN guidelines. The only sites that will be sold dedicated IPs are -
Reseller accounts that use Private Name Servers, SSL Sites and Anon FTP Sites (Dedicated Servers Only)

What version of software are you running?
you can see the current versions from within your control panel

What servers do you run?
Dual 2.4GHz Intel Xeons, Red Hat Linux 9.0, 2 GB of Ram

Does e-mail or FTP count against my bandwidth limit?
Yes. All FTP and incoming/outgoing email traffic counts towards your total bandwidth.

What happens if I exceed my allocated bandwidth?
You will receive an automatic email message warning you that you have
reached 80% of your contracted limit. This should give you plenty of time
to contact us and purchase more bandwidth. Once you have exceeded
your limit, your account is suspended for the rest of the current month.

example email

The domain yourdomain.com (servername) has reached 80% of its bandwidth limit.

Please contact the system admin as soon as possible

Do you backup my site for me
Yes, at present a weekly backup is available, otherwise you are responsible to maintain
a backup of your site, databases and email data yourself

How do I enable SSI in my HTML pages?
To take advantage of Server Side Includes (SSI) in your web page, make sure the
web page has the extension .SHTML and not .HTML

Cron Jobs what are they and how do I make and configure them
Pplease look at the online cPanel help

Do we offer SSH or JailShell?
No. For extra security, and as most other hosting companies, we do not give SSH out to our customers

Uploading to your Account, FTP and File Manager

CPanel guide to FTP Manager http://www.cpanel.net/docs/cp/FTPManager.htm

To upload using FTP use these settings

If your trying to FTP using an FTP client but when I try to send I am getting a "503 No Port Command
Issued First error."
Make sure you do not have passive transfer mode enabled in your ftp software.

quick connect code is ftp://username:password@domain-name.ext

For the main accounts ftp use these settings

as an example, I will say your main account is called spark.com and your username is tommy
and your main account password ( the one you use to access your control panel) lets just say pass123
as an example

site name: spark ftp account
IP Address / domain Name: spark.com or the IP the same as your control panel
User Name: tommy
Password: pass123
Port: 21
Remote Path: /public_html (can be left blank)
Local path: where your uploading from on your machine or can be left blank

for an extra FTP you have added

after adding your FTP account you will see something like this
"The FTP account test1234 with password test was added."

using the above example you would put your settings as :-

site name: anything you want to call it
IP Address / domain Name: the address as its seen in the controller after you have made it
User Name: test1234
Password: test
Port: 21
the remote path will be as you set it when you made the extra FTP Account

Where do I put my site
put your site files into public_html and any .cgi or .pl files in the cgi-bin within the public_html directory

What are these pre configured addresses about
When logging into the ftp server please use the username exactly as it appears below. If the username includes a "@", make sure to include it when logging in. Example: Use "john@doe.org" and not "john".

mydomain <-- mydomain is the main account name
anonymous@mydomain.ext <-- anonymous ftp is turned of on all accounts
ftp@mydomain.ext
mydomain_logs@mydomain.ext

These FTP accounts are pre entered into your account and use you main account name and password
as their logon details

File Manager

The File Manager Option within your Control Panel can prove to be a very powerful feature. It will handle many of the functions that an FTP or Telnet client will handle, all from within your browser. With the File Manager you can set permissions, upload files from your hard drive, create and edit html files and create subdirectories.

When you click on the File Manager feature inside your Control Panel, you will find that the screen is divided into three frames.

The left frame will show you your directories and files.
The upper right hand frame is your action frame, and the lower right hand frame is your trash folder.

Within each directory on the left frame, you will see links to create a new file, create new folder, or upload files. These actions pertain specifically to the directory that you are currently in. You will also see a column of numbers to the right of each folder and file. The far right column are the current permission settings for that specific folder or file and the column to the left of the permissions is the actual size of the that file or folder. When you click on the graphic next to the text link for a folder, it will open that folder and display the files and folders within that folder. When you click on the actual text link for a folder or file, actions for that directory or file are displayed in the upper right hand corner of your screen.

Locate your public_html folder and click on the text link for it. You will see the actions for the folder appear in the upper right hand corner of your screen.

Actions are pretty self-explanatory, so we'll forgo explaining what each do.

However, if you will locate a file rather than a folder within your directory listing and click on the text link of a file, you will see that the action screen will change to the specific actions pertaining to actual files and you will notice that the actions that you can perform for files are quite different from those of a folder.

By clicking on Show File, a new window will open and show you what the file actually looks like in your browser. By clicking on Edit File, you will be taken to a window where you can actually edit the html code within the file itself and save the changes. You can also change the permissions for the file, or copy, move, delete, or rename.

Remember, DO NOT DELETE OR RENAME any files that the system creates. Also, remember that
any files that you want available on the World Wide Web, must be placed within your public_html folder

Can I upload via FTP and view my page before Propagation

A while back cPanel stopped this type of access and you had to wait for the domain name to propagate
but recently, we have noticed you can use it again so here's how it works

To access your site before your domain name has propagated

IP Address / domain Name: use the IP address
User Name: Use your main account user name
Password: use your main account password
Port: 21

or if you like ftp://username:userpassword@IP address:21

this will put you into the root of the main account

to view your website before it has propagated use

http:// use the IP address as is on your control panel access/~account name

i.e.http://IP address here/~tommy would access an account with username tommy

DNS and Propagation of Domain Names

NAMESERVERS TAKE 24 - 48 HOURS TO PROPAGATE (RESOLVE)
we do in no way control this, and it takes as long as it takes, also you will not
be able to get or send email or use your domain name to access FTP or HTTP ( WWW)
until it has fully propagated, please refer to the accessing my site using the IP

IPS TAG's only apply to UK domain names (.co.uk/.org.uk/.me.uk).
An IPS TAG for a .uk domain name is the ID of the company who manages your UK domain name for you.

If you wish to change your IPS TAG to another company,
you can do this by contacting the company the the tag is held by, to find this out you can use our who is finder.

http://dnsstuff.com/

If you are changing your tag for us to control it, you must ask for your tag
to be transferred to us, once it is transferred you should receive an email
from the former tag host telling you the transfer has been completed.
then and only then can we go and claim the tag and make any adjustments to the DNS
required by you.

Once the IPS TAG has been changed all future domain renewals will then be processed through your new domain company and any hosting/forwarding services supplied by the former tag hoster will be terminated.

What does DNS, Propagation and resolving mean and why does it
take so long for my domain name to work

DNS means "Domain Name Servers" a domain name server converts your
your IP address into your domain name. sounds simple doesn't it :)

Propagation and resolving loosely means to spread around, and this is what
takes the time when you change or make a name DNS entry, most people
say it takes 24 hours to Propagate or resolve a DNS, but in truth it could
take a minute and anything up to 72 hours depending where you are.
Its all to do with how your browser works, you type in www.domain.com
and the browser sends this information to the nearest Domain name server
where that server attempts to translate that domain name into an IP address,
If it can't it sends it on to the next and so on until a translation is found.
But if it can't it just means that your domain name translation information
hasn't been spread around all the domain name servers yet and it returns
a site not found banner.

What DNS should my domain name point to?
Your welcome e-mail will detail which of our DNS servers you should point
your URL to. However, all virtual hosting accounts point to:

Name Server 1: ns1.hostbaron.com
Name Server 2: ns2.hostbaron.com

Can I have an IP address as my MX record?
Yes you can have an MX record that is an IP address as long as you enter a full stop at the end of the IP address. e.g. MX entry: 212.67.202.135. (with the "dot" at the end). Priority: 5.

Users can change their own MX records in the email section of their own control panel

How long does it take for a DNS change to take effect?
It usually takes 24 hours for a DNS change to take effect but please be aware that in some cases it will take up to 48 hours.

What is an A record?
A Record (Address Record): An entry in your DNS table (zone file) that maps each domain name (e.g. you.com) or sub domain (e.g. abc.you.com) to an IP Address. In other words, the A record specifies the IP address to which the user would be sent for each domain name. For example, you can have abc.you.com point to one IP address, and xyz.you.com point to a different IP address.

A typical A record layout you may have is:

www A 212.67.202.241
forum A 212.67.202

Basically if your forum was located on a host server located at 212.67.202.29 when you typed into the browser http://forum.domain.com you would go to the forum on your hosted server, if your host has configured the server for this.

What are the zone files?
Zone file Definition: A file on a name server that designates a domain name with all of its associated sub domains, IP addresses, and mail server. Parts of the zone file include the A record, CNAME, and MX records. A zone file is also called a "DNS table".

Email

cPanel's help guide to Email http://www.cpanel.net/docs/cp/Mail.htm

What are my main account Email Settings
If your email address is me@yourdomain.com, you would use the following info:
Username: me@yourdomain.com
Password: yourpassword (This is the password you set when you added the pop account in your cPanel)
incoming pop 3: mail.domainname.ext
outgoing SMTP: mail.domainname.ext

What is the catch all email address
this is the account as above, this will catch all emails addressed to anyone@yourdomain.com
but not those that are sent to a setup address

I have added an extra email address to my account, but can't get it to work
Remember the account name must be in the yourname+domain.ext format

Will I be able to send and receive email through you?
Yes! You will be able to send and receive email through our servers.
In technical terms, we provide both POP3 and SMTP capabilities.

What is the pop3 and SMTP addresses for emails on cPanel
incoming pop 3: mail.domainname.ext
outgoing SMTP: mail.domainname.ext

I have an add-on domain and can't see how to set up the mail for it
With all add-on domains cPanel allows you to select each account by using
pull down menus in all the controller setup window

Why am I getting emails that don't belong to me
As the main account you will receive all the emails that are directed to your
domain name, but not to a specified address, i.e mrbrown@yourdomian.ext
if this email address is not setup in your email accounts it will be forwarded to
the main account address unless you change the mail settings in cPanel to refuse unknown addresses

I can't send mail using SMTP
Be sure to enable SMTP Authentication in your email client or you may not be able to send mail. If your email client has trouble using a + sign in the login, you can use @, :, or % sign instead.

yourname+domain.ext or use yourname@domain.ext or yourname%domain.ext

PLEASE NOTE !!! We do not support the SMTP side of the mail server

Setting a quota for email accounts
if you set an email account quota low, please be aware that as soon as it becomes full
it will not allow downloading of the email from the server, it will suspend the email account

Spam Assassin
The best place to find out about Spam Assassin is
http://www.cpanel.net/docs/cp/spamAssassin.htm

I've noticed the X-AntiAbuse entries on the e-mail headers, and I'm just curious what the purpose of them is.
here's an example:

X-AntiAbuse: This header was added to track abuse, please include it with any abuse report
X-AntiAbuse: Primary Hostname - host1.cpanel-dns.com
X-AntiAbuse: Original Domain - mydomain.com
X-AntiAbuse: Originator/Caller UID/GID - [0 0] / [0 0]
X-AntiAbuse: Sender Address Domain - yourdomain.com

Web mail

Online WebMail clients

There are then 3 choices Horde, Neomail and squirrel

WHAT IS NEOMAIL? http://www.neomail.org/ click here for a google search for neomail
NeoMail is a web-based e-mail client that can be installed on any UNIX mail server that is also running a web server. It requires Perl 5, suidperl (included with Perl, or unneeded if you have secure suid script support in your UNIX kernel), and a current version of the CGI and MD5 Perl modules (included with most distributions). It is in no way affiliated with the web-based messaging service provided by NeoPets.com, also called NeoMail. Some features worth mentioning:

WHAT IS HORDE ? http://www.horde.org/ <<< horde seems to be very buggy and often goes wrong
Welcome to the home of the Horde Project. Here, you can find the PHP-based Horde Application Framework and our suite of web applications using it, from the widely used webmail program IMP to the contact manager Turba, the calendar manager Kronolith, and many others.

What is SquirrelMail? http://www.squirrelmail.org/ click here for a google search for SquirrelMail
SquirrelMail is a standards-based webmail package written in PHP4. It includes built-in pure PHP support for the IMAP and SMTP protocols, and all pages render in pure HTML 4.0 (with no JavaScript required) for maximum compatibility across browsers. It has very few requirements and is very easy to configure and install. SquirrelMail has all the functionality you would want from an email client, including strong MIME support, address books, and folder manipulation.

Little Envelopes in control panel don't work
OK we have had many emails saying that the little envelopes in the control panel
don't work, the main account will work, but the others will not.
This is the correct state for these links, you are only allowed to view the Main
accounts web mail from the control panel and none of the other accounts.
it is a security issue that cPanel have imposed

How do I access webmail for my server?
All sites are equipped with web based e-mail.
Webmail is accessed by either of these options
www.yourdomain.ext:2095 <--- asks for username... name@domain.ext and pass
www.yourdomain.ext/webmail <--- this is auto set up in cPanel - a virtual redirect

When you talk about email problem you open up a can of worms.

Email problems can be:

1. Email Server Problems
2. Your Email Programs Server Set Up
3. Your local ISP Problems
4. DNS Problems
5. InterNet Problems
6. Firewall Problems

We need to try to isolate the problem.

DNS Problems
If your domain has not moved over to the our servers then your email will not work.
Also I have seen the DNS change back and forth from the old server to the new servers for a day or so after the domain has moved. Only time can resolve DNS problem assuming you have the DNS set up right!

Is your problem in outgoing or incoming mail ?

Incoming - Check your email programs set up for your "Incoming Mail POP3" server.
It should be set to your domain name. If that does not work try putting mail.yourdomainname.ext

Logon to your web based email using your your domain name http://yourdomain.ext:2095
Can you get incoming email from the web mail. If you can then the problem is most likely in
your email programs set up.

Out Going Problems
Our outgoing mail servers use port 25 and some firewalls bloke this, also remember that
the incoming and outgoing mail servers addresses are mail.yourdomain.ext

Your local ISP Problems
Some ISP's change the way they pass email in their system. Due to SPAMMER many ISP's have shut off the port that lets you send out email using your domain name. I know of a few companies that have shut down this port
with out telling their customers of the change.

The only way to work around it is set your our going email server (SMPT) to your local ISP's email server.
I set my incoming server to mydomainname.ext and set the outgoing server to mail.myisp.ext.
YOU STILL put in your email account have for your server and the password just like you were going to your domain. The LOCAL ISP send the email off.

Many people set up their email accounts this way as it will send email faster. mine does !

Email Server Problems
Is your domain's email server up? Logon to your domains web mail. If you can send and receive
email from their the system is up and running.

also you can check the netstatus using your control panel link

Also you can test your email address here

http://dnsstuff.com/tools/mail.ch?domain=user@yourdomain.ext
you should get a message like this

Trying to connect to all mailservers:
us.co.uk. - 82.192.73.97 [Successful connect: Got a good response [250 Accepted]]

Firewall Problems
make sure that any firewall between you and the server has port 25 and 110 open
remember your ISP could have a firewall running as well as yourself

We hope this helps you in troubleshooting your email problems. If you still can't get it right email
us and tell us your problem and what you have tried and we will try and help you.

Mailing Lists

Where can I get support for a mailing list?
http://www.gnu.org/software/mailman/mailman.html - the home site of the maillist software and:
http://www.aurora.edu/~ckolar/mailman/ a documentation page
http://www.list.org/faq.html - A Frequently Asked Questions Page
http://www.python.org/mailman/listinfo/mailman-users a users list
http://www.python.org/pipermail/mailman-users/ mailing list archive to see if your question has
already been addressed.

Mailman is a popular mailing list script. Mailing lists are an ideal tool for communication between far-flung participants and can be about anything you want. Mailman allows you to set up a mailing list with a large number of configurable options, such as who is on the list, where mailing lists messages are sent, and whether you include welcoming messages to new subscribers.

The Mailman documentation, which is incorporated into its Administration panel, is clear and helpful, and should be referred to for all questions about using the script. The instructions in this section deal with how to set up, modify, and delete a Mailman mailing list from your CPanel. You can can also refer to the Mailman home page for more information.

Note: It is a good idea to be aware of spam and its definition before setting up a mailing
list - refer to E-mail Filtering for more information.

To add a mailing list:

Click on the Mailing Lists link in the Mail area.

Click on the Add Mailing List link.

Enter the name of the mailing list in the List Name field, the password for the list in the Password field, and the domain it is for from the Domain drop-down list.

Click on the Create button. The list is created in the /usr/local/cpanel/3rdparty/mailman/lists folder.

add-on domains are the way the CPanel adds domains to a account that can hold more than
one domain, if you have an advanced or business account this applies to you.
firstly make sure that the add-on domain name has fully propagated and is pointing to the same
name servers that you main account are pointing to and then go to your control panel and into
servers and there is a button called add-on domains, press this and then put the domain name into
the top box, the user name also becomes the storage folder within the root of the main account, so
if your add-on domain name is 123.com I would suggest a folder like 123com. the password is important
if this domain name is to used by a 3rd party. Then press the button and wait for a minute as the
server attempts to do the adding bit, It always gives you a successful or not text and you must wait for this

Subdomains are as with most other hosting packages or as cPanel puts it

Subdomains are a way of creating separate accounts within your master account, which are accessed as separate URLs. For example, you could set up a "timber" subdomain on your master account "hardware.org.mart", which would be accessed as "timber.hardware.org.mart". A lot of larger businesses use subdomains to establish branding and focus on separate product lines, because a subdomain creates a separate URL and web presence. However, you do not create a new cPanel when you create a subdomain. You still perform most administration functions for the subdomain through your master cPanel.

Parked Domains

this is what cPanel says about parked domains, but clearer we think !

You own the domain names 123.com and 456.com, You already have a web site for 123.com built and running,
but you do not want to create a new web site for 456.com at the moment.
By parking 456.com on top of 123.com, all URLs for 456.com will automatically go to 123.com instead.

Our way of looking at parked domain is similar to above but, one thing it doesn't say is that you can get emails
from a parked domain, also google & most other search engines cannot spider a parked domain

Redirecting

Click on the Redirects button within the control panels server section.

Enter the address of the web page to move in the first field.

Enter the redirection address in the second field.

Choose one of the following options in the drop-down list:

Temporary - This tells Internet traffic agents (browsers, search engines, etc.) that this is only a temporary redirection, and that they should return to this initial location again in the future for the same page.

Permanent - This tells the Internet traffic agents to go to the redirection address in the future, as the old address will never be used again.

First and foremost, make sure that FrontPage extensions are installed on BOTH
the server and on your account.

If you are not sure send a ticket and request that we make sure FrontPage extensions
are turned on on your account, mind you you should be able to tell from the listing
in your public_html folder that should contain the folders called
_private,_vti_bin,_vti_cnf,_vti_log,_vti_pvt and _vti_txt if you can see these the server
has frontpage extentions installed on your account.

uploading to us server using frontage is to :-

---------
remote server type is FrontPage
no SSL connection
and then enter user name and password into the popup box
some help can be found here too

Understanding CGI-bin

CGI stands for "Common Gateway Interface," a fancy name meaning computer programs running
on the web server that can be invoked from a www page at the browser. The "bin" part alludes to the binary executables that result from compiled or assembled programs. It is a bit misleading because cgi's
can also be Unix shell scripts or interpreted languages like Perl. CGI scripts need to be saved in
ASCII format and uploaded to your server's cgi-bin in ASCII or text format. This is very important.

CGI, Common Gateway Interface, includes programs that run on the server to enhance the
quality and functionality of a web site. There are many resources on-line that allow the
downloading of free cgi scripts.

( For instance: http://www.worldwidemart.com/scripts/ )
or ( http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/ )

We do allow running of cgi scripts on the server, however they must conform to our acceptable
server resource usage policy. If we deem that a script is using an excessive amount of server
resources, it will be disabled. We do offer shell access to our servers for debugging or creating
scripts- you will need Telnet access. We highly recommend that you setup Linux as a second
operating system on your own workstation, as the more you familiarize yourself with this operating
system, the better it will perform for you. As often as possible, however, our web servers should
be used only to upload the fully debugged final version of a cgi script so performance and uptime
for other customers on the server is not compromised.

To keep our hosting prices as low as possible we do not keep a programmer on staff who
can debug or install scripts for you. However we can refer you to a 3rd party programmer
that can provide you that service for a fee if you need it.

We have provided below some general information that will find helpful when installing cgi scripts.

Before a cgi script will work certain modifications must be made to them. Certain paths
must be specified in some scripts. After the "#" in the first line of the perl script,
the path to perl must be specified. /usr/bin/perl should suffice for this path. Below is a
printout of a "whereis perl" from our system.

GNU Privacy Guard
Gnu Privacy Guard is an open source alternative to PGP. It's available at http://www.gpg.org .

Also, often you will need to know the exact physical path to your root directory on the
webserver your account exists upon. On our newer Linux servers, the path
to your root directory is: /home/username/

Obviously, substitute "username" with the login you were assigned when you first received
your account details. Also, keep in mind that when you configure your CGI, that your /public_html
is included in your path. For instance, if you have a guestbook.pl script in your /cgi-bin,
the exact physical path to that file is: /home/username/public_html/cgi-bin/guestbook.pl

The documentation of your program should tell you what lines that you need to changed in
order to get your script up and running.

When you have all your modifications made you will want to save the file as a .pl or .cgi file.
(Make sure to use a plain text format.) When you upload the file DO NOT upload in binary
mode, instead using ASCII. Uploading in binary will cause the server not to recognize the
scripts as executables. Most FTP clients will upload .pl or .cgi files in binary mode by default
so you will need to change this. You will need to upload your scripts into your cgi-bin.

Understanding File Permissions:

There are a number of file permissions, which can be used for a variety of different purposes,
however we'll limit this tutorial to the ones most commonly used. To begin with, it's important
you understand the three categories of permissions, which are:

Owner Permissions:
The owner is you. In most cases, this is not so much of a concern, as you can only obtain owner
permissions in one of two ways. 1. FTP into your account using your Username and Password.
2. Login via Telnet with the same information.

Group Permissions:
The represents a group of users who have access to a particular directory. For example, a
password protected directory, whereas only members can access it upon providing the correct
Username and Password. In this case, any permissions you assign to "Group" would be applicable
to users with access to that particular directory.

Public Permissions:
This is the most important one of all. Public permissions determine what your world wide visitors can
and cannot do with your files. ALWAYS make sure you understand what a particular permission does
before assigning it to a file. If not, you may wakeup to find your website demolished by some
clown who was snooping about and gained access to your files.

Setting File Permissions:

To set file permissions:

1. Login with your FTP client
2. Open the directory where the file you wish to set permissions on resides
3. Right click on the file and select CHMOD
A box similar to the one above will appear

Observe how you can "select" the individual permissions you want, or simply enter the 3 digit
number if you know what it is. Most instructions included with downloaded scripts will tell indicate this to you.

By default, all files uploaded to the server automatically have permissions set to 644. The setting
644 is relatively safe, as it provides "Read" and "Write" access to the owner, while limiting the
rest of the public to "Read Only" access.

550 Relay Denied Error

ISSUE:

When sending mail I get the error message "550 Relay Denied" is given by the SMTP server (your email program may display "This message is not acceptable to your SMTP server. The message is not sendable until the recipient has been changed.") and mail cannot go out.

SOLUTION:
Service Providers have moved toward restricting access to their outgoing mail servers to provide better service to their customers and prevent SPAM from being sent through their mail servers. There are different methods for establishing restrictions that could result in you being denied access to your outgoing mail server.

When you connect to a mail server and send mail that is going to another mail server on another domain, that is called mail relay. Historically, SMTP servers did not check to verify that the sender was who he claimed to be and would simply pass the mail on with whatever return address was specified, no questions asked. Unsolicited bulk mailers have taken advantage of this to send huge volumes of mail with bogus return addresses (which slows down the server for the paying customers who have the right to use it, slows down servers everywhere with all that junk mail, and makes people mad at the ISP for allowing the bulk mail to cause such problems to be sent through their outgoing server).

One of the ways to restrict access to an outgoing mail server is to verify that the computer is on the ISP's local network. When you dial your modem and connect to your ISP, your computer is given an IP address that identifies you as being a part of that ISP's network. If you have two ISPs and dial up to one and then connect to the other's mail server, it may prevent you from relaying mail because your computer is not identified as being on the local network for the provider whose mail server you are sending through. In this case, you should try to use the SMTP server for the provider you have used to dial up and connect to the Internet.

Another way to restrict access is to insist on a local domain return address. If you connect to the mail server for "domain.com" it may only allow you to send mail that is from "username@domain.com" -- if you try to send from another account and have the return address of "username@anotherdomain.com" it may restrict you from relaying to another server.

Note: Relay does not apply to sending to users local to the SMTP server. If you connect to "domain.com" and send mail to "user@domain.com" you are not relaying. Often this is confusing because it means that you can send a test message to yourself, but cannot send mail to other people on the Internet.

The most recent shift in sending mail is to start requiring SMTP Authentication. This means that in order to send mail through an SMTP server you must provide a username and password or SMTP Authentication. Please check with your email client and see how to turn the authentication on in need with your ISP. One of the best ways to fix this is to use your local ISP's SMTP server to send out your email.

Email is not as easy as it once was thinks to spammers!

Using Server Side Includes - SSI

SSI works in conjunction with a web page usually with the .shtml extension. The .shtml extension
tells the server to do something different with the web page. When you append the .html or .htm
extension, this tells the server to "read" the page only. The .shtml extension tells the server to
"Execute" the page, in addition to just reading it.

So, why would you want to execute the page? There are various commands you can program into
a web page, which the server will look for and parse when the file is called as .shtml. In many cases,
this mode is used in conjunction with Server Side Include (SSI) tags, to call a CGI script. For example,
you have a visitor counter script, and we'll call it count.cgi. Every time someone visits your website,
you want the script to be called, so that it logs the visitor into a file.

To do this, you would place an SSI tag into your web page. The tag in this case,

would look something like:

This small tag, which is hidden in the html coding of your page is telling the server to:

1. Go to the cgi-bin
2. Execute count.cgi

That's it! The information has been captured and processed by the count.cgi script. Of course,
that's the short version of what happens. The long version would no doubt, would take us far
beyond the scope of this document.

PLEASE do not use the .shtml extension on "all" of your web pages unless it's absolutely
necessary. With a busy web site, this means that every page must be executed, as opposed to
just read. This as you can appreciate, can add considerable memory and CPU load to the system.
As always, read the instructions that came with your script carefully. They should provide
specific instructions on how to configure the script, as well as the SSI tag.

Apache suEXEC Support

CGI Scripting Notes
We use the suEXEC wrapper that comes with Apache. This "wrapper" is a setuid-root script that is
executed by the apache server, which will execute your CGI script. suEXEC does various security
checks before executing your CGI script. If any of these checks fail, you're script won't be executed,
and an error will be returned.

The use of suexec is a good and wonderful thing. To take full advantage of it, file permissions
can be optimized, replacing the more general defaults suggested in the install doc. For data files
that normally require "766" permissions, use "744". Data folders that require "777" should use "755".

When setting permissions for cgi scripts, the most common permissions setting is 755. 755 allows
the owner "Read and Write" access, while allowing the Group and Public "Read and Execute" permissions.
So what are we actually saying? In short, when users access your cgi script, the server has been
instructed to grant them permissions to "Read and Execute" it. Sound scary? It's not actually &

Remember that a script is a program that must be processed by the server. As long as the script
is written properly, you can safely allow users to execute it, and thus providing the desired results.
For example, if they wanted to post a message to your wwwboard discussion forum, then they
would need these permissions to execute wwwboard.pl, which would write their new message to an
html file, which is displayed on the main forum. The new message would reside in a directory on
your site so other users could view it. Most cgi, perl and other scripts you'll be installing
come complete with instructions telling you which permissions you'll need to set them to.

WARNING!

Setting permissions on files is a relatively simple task, however MAKE SURE you fully understand
what it is you're allowing the public to do with your files. For example, some less experienced
users often make the fatal mistake of simply setting ALL of their files to 777. While 777 will
automatically allow executing privileges, it also allows full "READ, WRITE, and EXECUTION
ability to the entire world!!!! suEXEC will now take care of this problem!

This is how web sites get hacked! While most visitors have good intentions, all it takes is one
person whom snoops about your files seeking an "Open Back Door." This could result is them
gaining full access to your directories, which means they can do anything from deleting your
entire site, to defacing it with obscenities.

New to cgi? Here is a page with questions and answers to numerous questions evolving around
the inns and outs of using cgi within your scripts: http://www.w3.org/Security/Faq/www-security-faq.html

Shared SSL and dedicated SSL (not shared)

What Cpanel says about SSL http://www.cpanel.net/docs/cp/SSLShellTelnetaccess.htm

SSL Certificates

Secure Digital Certificates are the bedrock to those who are serious about e-commerce from their web site.
Whenever forms are completed, details that you enter are transmitted to the server as plain text.
This can be disastrous if you have sensitive information to protect, such as your credit card number
when paying for purchases.

What does a secure certificate do?

Shoppers visiting sites with SSL's enabled, use an encrypted link between their computer and the
web site, so sensitive details are not sent as plain text. The browser displays a locked padlock or an
unbroken key to indicate that the link is in place. When visiting a secure site, your browser will
automatically check that the certificate which has been issued is applicable to the same domain
named web site that you have gone to visit.

SSL providers perform a strict validation/authentication of information before issuing a certificate which
involves checking that the name of the organisation (company/charity, etc) that has requested the
certificate does actually exist and is the owner of the domain name that the certificate has been requested for.

Shared SSL Certificate

As a client of ours you would acquire from us space using a shared SSL Certificate. This SSL Certificate provides 128 bit
encryption to any documents called by HTTPS. Usually a warning in your visitors browser will pop up
stating the use of a shared SSL cert. There is no way around this unless you get your own dedicated certificate.

Step up your websites security with your own Secure Certificate.

Although you have access to a shared cert with us, you will benefit from a Secure Cert
registered in your websites name.

Shared certs produce a popup in your visitors browser warning the visitor that secure certificate is
not owned by the website owner. There is no way around this popup since it's generated by the
visitors browser and not the cert itself.

A shared cert is no less secure than a cert that you would register in your name. It's the same cert,
however, in the eyes of a paying customer it may not appear very professional.

Shared certs are more for testing and sharing data between users who understand it's a shared cert.

Getting your own Secure Certificate.
We recommend getting your own cert if you plan on accepting credit cards online. We can usually install
the cert and have it up in running in 3-7 days. We handle everything from purchasing the cert for you,
in your name, to installing, testing and any maintenance required thru the life of the cert (1 year).

MySQL

One common problem I have noticed is that people don't realise that all cPanel
databases are prefixed with there user name and that they have to assign the rights
for a user in MySQL to have access to a database they have made.

brief description on making a database and allowing access to a user name
first for this example the name of the domain that I am setting a database up on is "mydomain.com"

go to your MySQL part of your controller and in the box that says "Create MySQL database"
put the name of the database you require to make, I will use database1 as an example
press the "Create MySQL database" button and that's it made

Now goto "Create MySQL user" and put into the usernames box the username name you require
to use and the password for that username in the second box, now press the button called
"Create MySQL user" and that's a user name and password made. As an example I have made
user1 and password 1

Now go down the page to find "Grant all permissions on a MySQL database to a MySQL user"
there are two boxes called user and MySQL_Database with pull down tabs
In my example I would need to select in user name "mydomain_user1" in the username box and
"mydomain_database1" in the MySQL_Database box. Notice that I have had to select the boxes
with my database and username with a prefix attached to it.

Now this is important you must press the button called "Grant permissions" this is what
people don't do

Now look up the page until you come to the top top of the form called "Existing MySQL databases"
and look down till as in my example you would find a database called "mydomain_database1" in bold
on the left of the window and look directly below it and "Users in mydomain_database1" and and just
below that there should be not in bold the user name that has the permission to access the database ,
in my example "mydomain_user1" and after it a little red X in a box that is used to delete the users
permissions from that database if you want.

right that's it you have your database and your user name and your password so in my example you
would have these details for the database you have made

$dbhost = 'localhost';
$dbname = 'mydomain_database1';

phpMyAdmin

Everyone has there own way of working with phpMyAdmin, I find my way easy
so i'll explain my way and you can adapt it to your own style.

first understand that some of phpMyAdmin works with popup windows, so if you
have a popup stopper and you find phpMyAdmin doesn't work turn off your popup killer
also if you can access the phpMyAdmin window consider that your sites PHP and MySQL is working ok.

phpMyAdmin is not a tool to be played with if you don't understand it, but you can do
maintenance if you are careful ( you have been warned )

in the first window you can see the home hyperlink, this will return you to the page we are at
the "home page" you can create MySQL database from within here but I would use the one
I have mentioned above here

here is how I do it, click on the box that says databases on the left hand side
under the home link a menu will appear of the databases on your account, select the
Database you what to work on, and the right window will change to a window
with 5 buttons across the top

Structure -
you can create databases in here ( you are in here already as its the database main window)
SQL -
this is where you can add your data that most web-apps need you to add
Export
this is where you can backup your databases
Search
Search your database for the word or phase you need to find
Query
Query your database fields ext

here's a useful link MySQL documentation

I can't go into this to much as it would take hours and is not what we do, we do not
setup or maintain or repair your Database's for you

Resetting your account, changing domain name or account Name

Changing domain name or account name
sometimes this can be done easily by just changing the domain name or user name
but sometimes it requires a reset as described below

Resetting
firstly, resetting your account resets everything including your data and databases " EVERYTHING"

So backup everything before submitting the request by mail
(has to be by mail read on)
but as I know you all backup on a regular basis of course....

Right submit your email to the ticket system

Your account name
your account domain name
your password ( if you do not will will just add one and let you know)
type of account
server you are on i.e cpanel 1, 2 etc

as we are resetting your account we will need your ISP email to contact you with
as your domain emails will no longer exist

Changing Your main account Password

This can be done from within your control panel, you can ticket us and we will change it happily
but you can do it yourself if you want too

Are you being spied on or has your account been hijacked

In the last few days I have found 2 or 3 accounts that have been
hijacked for sending spam with......

of course it came to light when we suspended the accounts and when
then asked why and gave the proff and well you can imagine the rest..

how is this happening, well one way is though you the users yourselves
those of you that are not running antivirus software or a firewall or spy ware finders are risking
it the most, 2 out of the 3 have reported
keylogger spies on their computers and of course these record what you are typing and hey presto!!
they have your account details

So I today have got 3 FREE programs for you all to get and use
if you want, I can't force anyway to consider these, but I would point
out that its not only your account details these people are getting....

We at us do not in anyway recommend this products or guarantee them, by clicking on the link you are agreeing to this understanding

Moving you domain name to us

TRANSFERING A DOMAIN NAME:

If you have not ordered a domain from us directly you will need to make changes with your
current provider as for it to work!

If it's a .com, ..net or .org and alike, Please ask your provider to change the Name servers to

name Server 1: ns1.hostbaron.com
name Server 2: ns2.hostbaron.com

otherwise with a .co.uk or ..org.uk and alike, you need to request an IPS TAG change.
You can ask for the name servers to be changed as above if you would rather that
but having the account and tag in the same place often makes life easier

Please note: If you change your IPS tag you will need to send us a service ticket
to make us aware of this change before your domain will become active.

at the moment we do not charge an admin fee to change nameservers

we do however change to the IPS TAG from us to another hosting company

block access to your web site from specific IP addresses

The IP Deny Manager enables you to block access to your web site from specific IP addresses.

hotlinking to your site (refer to HotLink Prevention for more information about hotlinking).

To add an IP address to the IP Deny Manager:

Click on the IP Deny Manager button on the home page.

Enter the IP address that you want to block in the IP Address field.

Cpanels search engine submit

CPanel allows you to submit your web site details to several search engines at one time.
Some pointers on this process:

This is not a guaranteed way of becoming registered by these search engines, as some may
charge a registering fee. It is always best to check each search engine site individually to see
what their registration policy currently is.

It may take several weeks (4-8 weeks is common) before your web site will appear on a search engine.

Do not submit your site multiple times to the same search engine within a short period of time,
as the search engine may ban you from its list.

To submit your site to one or more search engines:

Click on the Search Engine Submit button on the home page.

Click on the tick boxes next to the search engines that you want to submit to.

Enter the address of your site in the URL field and your contact e-mail address in the Email field.

Enter a short description of your site in the Comments field.

Enter the keywords of your site in the Keywords field. These are the handful (3-6) of words
that are predominantly used by search engines to index your site. Separate each key word by a comma.

Choose the language of the site in the Language drop-down list and the country in which the
site is located in the Country drop-down list.

Choose the category that your web site best fits into from the Category drop-down list.

Click on the Submit button.

Codewalkers.com was originally created by Matt Wade. The design, back-end, and idea are all his.
The site originally came into existence in January of 2002 and has since grown beyond expectations.
The growth can only be contributed to the great support of the community. Members of the
community have sent in numerous scripts, tutorials and other resources to support the site.
Without the constant support of our user base in the forums, this site would surely wither away.
We want to thank you for coming to Codewalkers and express our extreme gratitude.
